Work has begun on the Haliç (Golden Horn) – Unkapanı Road Tunnel Crossing Project, which Kadir Topbaş, the Mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul had made the barcovision presentation of and called, “My mastership work”, in the speech he made to the public in Esenler before the last local elections.
The new project, which will bury the Unkapanı Bridge built in 1836 into history, is expected to be completed in 2018. 100 million TL has been set aside for the project from the budget of the Metropolitan Municipality. The traffic between the two sides of Haliç will go under the sea with the tunnel, with one entrance to the tunnel being in Kasımpaşa, and the other in Unkapanı.
To be connected to alternative routes
The exit points of the tunnel, through which the traffic will flow in both directions, will be connected to alternative routes through circular junctions. Mayor Kadir Topbaş had announced that the Sokullu Mehmet Pasha Mosque and the Perşembe Pazarı area would be revised when the project is brought to life.
