The tunnelling efforts for the Üsküdar-Sancaktepe metro line, a part of the railway systems in Istanbul which is expected to relieve the traffic to a great deal, have already started.
Having launched the tunnelling activities during a ceremony held in Ümraniye, Kadir Topbaş, Mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, said that the Tunnel Boring Machine would dig 22 meters per day.
Stating that 700 thousand people would be transported in the second metro line of the Anatolian side, Mayor Topbaş said that the line was made up of 16 stations and it would become operational in 38 months, namely, end of the year 2015.
Emphasizing that the duration of transport would become shorter along with the inception of the metro line, Mayor Topbaş said: “It will be possible to go from Çekmeköy to Üsküdar in 24 minutes, to Yenikapı in 36 minutes, to Taksim in 44 minutes and to the airport in 71 minutes. Isn’t that fantastic? 126 carriages will have become operational. 58 thousand passengers per hour will be transported. Once progress is achieved in the efforts, it will be integrated with the cable car extending from Mecidiyeköy to Altunizade. Someone who is coming from Çekmeköy will be able to use this cable car to go to Mecidiyeköy. This is not a dream. “
Reading the lines written by the Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 1994 in the daybook kept during the construction of Taksim Metro, the Mayor Topbaş wrote his thoughts down on the same daybook.
Üsküdar-Sancaktepe Metro to be Completed in 38 Months
The foundation for the 20-kilometer-long line was laid in 6, June, 2012 in Çekmeköy. The line, which is planned for completion in 38 months, will cost 564 million Euros. It will become operational for transport before the end of 2015 and will carry 700 thousand passengers per day.
Following the Kadıköy-Kartal metro on the Anatolian side, the second metro line will be added to this line connecting the districts of Üsküdar, Ümraniye, Çekmeköy and Sancaktepe. This line will become integrated with Marmaray in Üsküdar and the metro-bus line in Altunizade. Furthermore, transfer will be possible via the Altunizade-Mecidiyeköy cable car line which is currently in project phase.
